2016 Nitro Champs: Sydney Dragway

The 2016 Nitro Champs at Sydney Dragway drew a capacity crowd and delivered one of the more significant results in Australian drag racing. Spinozzi Racing's Speedmaster-powered Camaro recorded one of the top five fastest side-by-side six-second passes in Australian history in the opening round.

Pro Slammer Results

The first round of Pro Slammer set the tone for the night. Side-by-side racing from start to finish saw John Zappia, Taylor, Belleri, and Paul Cannuli take the win lights. Zappia reasserted his position at the top of the Pro Slammer standings with a 5.77-second pass, keeping fellow Doorslammer competitor Ben Bray in second as Bray continued developing his Corvette.

The Pro Stock semi-finals matched Spinozzi against Tyronne Tremayne, with Bektash facing Chilton, who had eliminated top qualifier Aaron Tremayne in the earlier rounds.

The Pro Slammer final came down to Paul Cannuli and West Australian veteran John Zappia. In a close side-by-side run, Cannuli took the win with a 6.63-second pass in his Duster.

What It Means

For Spinozzi Racing, the result places their Speedmaster Camaro among an elite group in Australian drag racing. Consistent six-second performance at this level reflects the engineering that goes into the combination, not just the driver behind the wheel.

The next round of the 400 Thunder Series moved to the 2016 Winternationals, 9 to 12 June at Willowbank Raceway, Queensland.
