Overview

The TorqueWorm is a torque bias, 6 pinion gear, limited slip unit. This is a preloaded unit allowing for a faster reacting unit. Unlike our competitors that only use 3 or 4 pinion gears, the use of 6 pinion gears means the stress on gears is spread over a greater surface area, reducing the load on all internal components. The internal components are made from EN36 material as used in racing. The outer case is made from 8620 Chrome-Nickel-Moly steel and the case hardened for long life.

How do TorqueWorm Helical Gear LSDs Work?

Torque biassing TorqueWorm helical LSDs distribute torque between the wheels, loading more torque towards the wheel with the best traction, improving performance and driveability; particularly in low-grip situations.

The friction distribution within the LSD is managed by the helical gearing.
When torque is applied to a helical gear system, it generates a force that pushes the gear into the differential body, resulting in friction.
Increases in torque cause an increase in thrust force that is directly proportional to the amount of torque. This enables the TorqueWorm LSD to deal with significant traction imbalance even under high power conditions, such as when exiting a powered up corner.
However, at low torque levels, the LSD can differentiate quietly and smoothly, making the differential ideal for normal road driving.
The popular parallel axis helical geared configuration used by the TorqueWorm LSD is optimized for even load distribution.
They have a torque bias of 5:1, which means that if one wheel loses traction, the wheel with the most grip can receive five times as much torque as the slipping wheel.

However, five times zero is still zero, so all of these helical LSDs work best when both wheels are 'planted' and some traction on the slipping wheel is still available. In practice, this is rarely a problem because there is always some 'drag' on the slipping wheel, but some experienced drivers use left-foot braking to partially lock the spinning wheel.

Brand Information

In 1979, the company was founded with Pete's Performance, which was a small speed workshop. It began by building engines for customers as a hobby, and it has now grown to include selling, assembling, manufacturing and racing high performance engine parts. Over the years, the company has grown into a worldwide high performance powerhouse. Growing from a one-man bricks-and-mortar business; to now a supply chain in which entails more than 400+ people all across the world. Today, Pete's Performance has evolved into the internationally known Speedmaster: which has distribution centres and offices is Sydney, Los Angeles and Shanghai.
